Which works by Austrian authors can be read in school? How can these texts be used to enhance literary learning? The contributions in this volume offer initial answers to these questions, which Sabine Fuchs, Georg Huemer, Gunda Mairbäurl, Ernst Seibert and Marlene Zöhrer, supported by Andreas Hudelist, Heidi Lexe, Nicola Mitterer, and Carmen Sippl, addressed as part of the research project ‘Studienbuch – Österreichische Kinder- und Jugendliteratur für den Unterricht’ (Study Book – Austrian Children's and Young Adult Literature for the Classroom).

The volume is intended as a starting point for engaging with children's and young adult literature from Austria and, in addition to an introductory overview of the development of children's and young adult literature from Austria, offers contributions on selected authors who have had a significant impact on children's and young adult literature since 1945. In addition to analyses, the contributions offer didactic ideas for working with selected texts. By contextualising the authors and texts, lines of tradition are also made visible and opened up for discussion. What all the works discussed have in common is that, regardless of when they were written, they are relevant to young readers today, are suitable for both university studies and school lessons, enable literary learning and allow for different didactic focuses and objectives.
