Abstract

This article is concerned with the implementation of the lecture "Basics and Basic Concepts of Pedagogy" (2 ECTS) as a self-directed, highly automated online course without the need for face-to-face meetings, implemented in the learning management system “moodle”. Considerations for course design and content preparation are presented in this article. A low barrier approach for the online course is argued and broken down into guidelines for course design and content preparation. The online course was carried out in two consecutive years with 106 students attending. Evaluation results show that this design approach leads to a high level of student’s acceptance and a high-quality knowledge transfer process. This can be seen in the course activities of the students, the students’ task processing, and the survey results. Finally, two problem areas are shown with this lecture design, these are: high effort for course implementation and maintenance, and secure online assessment of students’ performance.
