The article focuses on the importance of listening with regard to language acquisition and the expansion of language skills. For language acquisition, it is essential that differences between sounds and sound patterns are recognized. In addition, individual words in the flow of speech must be identified and differences between individual speakers must be ignored (Szagun, 2013, p. 45f). Speech melody, rhythm and emphasis reveal a lot about whether a question is asked, a request is made or an order is given (Weinert & Grimm, 2018, p. 446). Attentive listening is of central importance for the language and, subsequently, for the acquisition of knowledge by the pupils. In addition, it forms an important basis for the interpersonal interaction and communication of all people involved in school life (Imhof, 2010, p. 15).
The milestones of language development are outlined in this article as well as the functioning of hearing. In addition, terms related to hearing are explained. As a way of promoting listening in the classroom, the concept and results of the evaluation of the "Hörminute" are presented (Gesierich, 2024).
