Abstract

The article describes the need for a concept of comprehensive language(s) education in the context of school development, which is planned, implemented and evaluated as a task for all those involved in school education. The topic is addressed on the basis of current specialist and research literature, highlighting the changing meaning of var-ious technical terms in this context and the associated development of methodologi-cal concepts towards multilingual language-aware teaching as part of an overall con-cept. The presentation of current and planned developments in Austrian schools re-flects the dynamics in the field and the explosive nature of education policy: The design of new curricula as a legal basis for the implementation of Sprachförderung (language support) as well as sprachliche Bildung (language education), including in the form of language-sensitive/language-aware teaching, the further development of the Deutsch-fördermodell (German language support model), various measures for the uniform qualification of teachers for German language support and comprehensive language education.
