Abstract

Primary schools today are perceived as more heterogeneous than ever before, requiring didactic adaptations to create a suitable learning environment for all children. Current approaches underutilize the potential of diversity. We propose a diversity-sensitive approach that not only supports content and language learning through language-sensitive measures but also centers on the pupils themselves. This approach incorporates their lived experiences and backgrounds in a stereotype-free manner, emphasizing a resource- and potential-focused perspective. In this article, we illustrate how this approach, implemented in a school project titled My Home in a multicultural primary school class, enhances children’s content learning and language development. Moreover, it increases their active participation paving the way to transcultural engagement.
