Abstract

Education is undergoing change just as societal processes and our climate do. Still it is a huge challenge, to steer those changes towards a sustainable development regarding economical, ecological and social dimensions. In order to do so, education is one of the most important aspects (cf. UNESCO, 2017a). A new way of teaching and learning in the spirit of transformative education requires well educated teachers as well as extensive spatial and temporal resources.

This article is concerned with the theoretical background and related possibilities of education for sustainable development (ESD) and shows ways of integrating ESD not only in in-service teacher education but also on the level of primary education. The article describes a newly developed teacher training series, offered by the Private University College of Teacher Education (KPH) Graz. Consisting of several sustainability-related courses, its aim is to support teachers in establishing and further promoting ESD in schools. The present article further provides ideas on the question how teacher education can draw attention to climate change and contribute to a sustainable world.
