The rapid integration of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is transforming workplace tasks and competency requirements faster than earlier technologies, with heterogeneous effects across occupations. In line with vocational-school curricula, acquiring comprehensive AI competencies is vital. While AI literacy primarily encompasses technical knowledge and skills, AI competency expands this notion to include application-oriented attitudes and self-reflective mindsets for professional contexts. This paper proposes a theory-based model linking modes of human–GenAI interaction and competence development. It draws on cognitive load theory, cognitive offloading, and Randazzo et al.’s empirical typology of cyborg, centaur, and self-automator interaction modes. The model shows how these modes offer distinct opportunities and risks for AI competency, subject-matter competence, and efficiency gains
