The digital transformation of work and vocational education raises pressing questions about how future teachers can be prepared to design, implement and reflect digitally supported teaching in a professionally meaningful way. This contribution addresses the relationship between theory and practice and the development of digital competences in initial teacher education. It presents the module Future Class – Using and Teaching Emerging Technologies in a Meaningful Way, with the systematic planning, enactment and reflection of teaching units for industrial mechanics apprentices, thereby operationalising DigCompEdu and the Digital-Pedagogical-Content-Knowledge (DPACK) framework in a practice-integrated setting. A particular focus lies on the use of the learning app PROSUMIO, which functions both as a learning environment for students and as a teaching tool in vocational classrooms, linking disciplinary content, didactics and school practice. The paper outlines the theoretical and institutional background, describes the design and implementation of the module, and reports selected quantitative and qualitative findings on students’ perceived development of digital and pedagogical competences as well as on conditions for sustainable anchoring and transfer to other contexts.
